Nepal is the most religious Hindu-majority country in the world, with most of the important Hindu pilgrimage centers concentrated in this country. Thus Nepal is one of the popular pilgrimage destinations among Hindu people across the world. Nepal is also the birthplace of Siddhartha Gautama (The Buddha), because of which Buddhism has a very special place in the country and is often intertwined with Hinduism among some communities. Some of the major Hindu pilgrimage sites in Nepal are Pashupatinath Temple, Muktinath Temple, Changunarayan Temple, Patan Area, Budhanilkantha Temple, Pathivara Devi temple, Halesi Mahadev Temple, Devghat, Janakpurdham, Doleshwar Mahadev and Manakamana Temple. Janakpur the birthplace of Janaki or Sita, the consort of Lord Ram, is an important religious pilgrimage site in the Terai plains, in south-central Nepal. Janakpur is known as the capital of Province 2 today. During the Treta Yug period about 12,000 years ago Janakpur used to be the capital of King Janak's Kingdom of Mithila. This place is part of Ramayan Circuit yatras.
